Overview:

Approximately 1 in 4 people in Derbyshire smokes; the majority of these would like to stop and would like to stop soon but find it difficult to do this without support.

 

Derbyshire County Stop Smoking Service held its first clinics in October 2000, since then thousands of smokers have been helped to stop.  Some of the advisers, who helped smokers at those first clinics, are still running stop smoking clinics in Derbyshire today and so they have acquired lots of knowledge and skills to help even the heaviest smoker to stop.

 

This year the Stop Smoking Service advisors expect about 6,000 smokers to successfully quit with their help. On average 7 out of 10 smokers who set a quit date with the specialist service will be successful.

 

Smokers of all ages have been helped, the youngest person to benefit was 10 years and the oldest was 87 years. It doesn’t matter  whether the smoker has 100 cigarettes a day or 1 cigarette a week, smokes roll-ups, pipe or cigars, the support can be tailored to each person’s needs.

 

Some smokers are reluctant to try in case they fail or they have had numerous failed attempts and give up. Be reassured that whatever the situation the advisor will have come across the problem before.

 

The clinics are provided during the day, evening and weekend in venues ranging from village halls to hospitals; pubs and clubs to pharmacies. When access to a clinic is difficult telephone or email support is offered and in special circumstances home visits may be arranged.  Advisors even visit smokers in hospital to offer support and help them deal with cravings.
